Designed in 1960 by revolutionary Danish designer Verner Panton, the Panton Chair (often referred to as the "S-Chair") represents one of the most audacious milestones in 20th-century furniture design. Celebrating fluid ergonomics and pop-art dynamism, it became the world’s first single-material, seamless plastic cantilever chair produced in a single continuous mold.
This rare matching set of six chairs originates from the late 1960s serial production manufactured in Europe by Vitra and distributed internationally under the prestigious Herman Miller Furniture Company name. Crafted during the sought-after Baydur rigid polyurethane foam era (developed with Bayer in Leverkusen), these early models carry the distinct structural weight, rich density, and crisp profile prized by serious collectors and design historians worldwide. Each chair bears the authentic period manufacturer markings embedded on the underside.
Presented in excellent vintage condition, this set has undergone a professional conservative restoration and multi-stage repolishing process. The deep glossy black lacquered finish reflects light beautifully, showcasing the elegant curves and cantilevered silhouette without the dulling or surface haze common to unrestored plastic pieces of this vintage.
Preserving the High-Gloss Lacquer Finish
- To maintain the deep "wet-look" mirror shine, apply a specialized non-abrasive high-gloss lacquer wax or fine plastic polish (such as VuPlex or Novus #1) once or twice a year using a plush micro-fiber applicator pad.
- Never use scouring pads, abrasive creams, powders, or harsh all-purpose household sprays. These will etch fine scratches into the clear lacquer layer and cause surface haze.
- Chemical Restrictions: Keep aggressive solvents—such as pure acetone, paint thinners, alcohol, or ammonia-based cleaners—away from the surface, as they can melt or permanently cloud vintage polyurethane finishes.
